Cracker - Bob's Car - Liner Notes
-
St. Cajetan (live...Nashville)
D. Lowery-rhythm guitar/lead vocal, J.
Hickman-lead guitar/bkg vocal, Bruce Hughes-bass/bkg vocal, D. Lovering-drums.
One of the first songs David and Johnny worked up together that first week
after hooking up in Los Angeles. The live arrangement is pretty much the same
as what went down that afternoon in 1990 over beers on an 8 track.
-
China (BDY demo)
Recorded on out 8 track at "Big Dirty Yellow"...the
broken down old post civil war era house we rented after packing up and moving
to Richmond in the summer of 1990. Memories of rats, cats, fist fighting
neighbors and nearly non-stop music making.
-
Hans' Lament (BDY demo)
Written on mandolin while Johnny's baby son
cried and tried to grab the strings...hence the title. Recorded at Big Dirty
Yellow with David on guitar, bass and percussion, Johnny on mandolin and local
Richmond teenage prodigies David Van Deventer and Josh Camp on fiddle and
accordion respectively.
-
Red Sonja (w/FSK)
A haunting bilingual duet featuring David and Michaela
Melian also found on "The Sound of Music" CD by FSK.
-
James River (BDY demo)
Another favorite Big Dirty Yellow recordings.
This song was from the last CVB tour. Written by David and talented
multi-instrumentalist David Immergluck (who played on the "Key Lime Pie" tour).
As with most of the BDY stuff, David and Johnny play all the instruments on the
track.
-
Lonesome Johnny Blues (BDY demo)
Johnny still had some Bakersfield dirt
under his nails when David and he started playing together. David really liked
this song and they tried to do it like Dwight Yoakum. Later released on
"Kerosene Hat" in a rather more `Crackerish' style.
-
Sunday Train (Ashtray demo)
A few months after the break up of CVB,
David called Johnny to see if he wanted to meet up and work on some songs.
They got an 8 track recorder, set it up in their manager's apartment and dubbed
the place "Ashtray Studios". This version was recorded in the kitchen with
Johnny on mandolin and background vocals and David on everything else. They
recorded another version during the "Kerosene Hat" sessions which later
appeared on a CD single.
-
Father Winter (BDY demo)
Written in a snowed in cabin in the San Bernardino mountains where I lived
for 3 months prior to meeting up with David to start Cracker. Bass and
percusion by David, acoustic guitar, Dobro, and vocals by me.
-
When It's Raining In Texas (w/FSK)
A beautiful FSK rendition of David's
sad soldiers lament (with Wilfred Petzi on lead vocal). David has now produced
3 albums for his German friends and both he and Johnny have had a great time
touring with FSK as honorary band members.
-
Whole Lotta Trouble
Written by Chris Leroy (with a few changes made by Johnny). Cracker
recorded this version during the "Kerosene Hat" sessions and
it eventually made it on to the soundtrack for the movie "Empire Records".
-
Dr. Bernice (w/FSK)
This version, recorded on a hand held recorder
(sorry audiophiles) in Munich with FSK, predates the Cracker CD track and it is
still the band's favorite version of the song (also featured on the FSK CD "The
Sound of Music").
-
River Euphrates (live...Atlanta)
A song from the Tucson EP.
