It would be wonderful if they could put together some sort of tribute to fill his timeslot at SxSW, but organizing such a thing might be fairly impossible with so little time to prepare.

Saddened to read this Morst. As I mentioned on the other side, it was unfortunate Alex didn't make SXSW as planned. I have no Big Star in my collection, but will be cranking some out from the services of Youtube.
It's only March, and so many are entering the big sky above.

I bet you're exaclty right, Mungo. The band sounds very "tentative" on several of those songs.

Following up on something I posted a while back, which admittedly had precious little to do with CVB... It appears Lance Mackey will indeed be winning his 4th consecutive Iditarod dogsled race today, the first person to win 4 races & possibly setting a new record for fastest finish in the process... & this despite being deprived of the naturally-occurring & legally-prescribed medication he has chosen to fight the chronic pain left over from his battle with cancer.

Interesting find! That's a pretty early show, maybe Devil Song and Sometimes weren't really finished by then. Some of the Good Guys lyrics are different too, and it sounds like they played it together exactly once before...

They both seem to be familiar songs but with completely different, perhaps improvised, lyrics. Track 10 seems to be exactly as you have described it, track 11 is the melody of the song that starts with "sometimes it seems to me that you don't say what you mean you leave me guessing & trying to figure it out..." (the actual title of which escapes me at the moment, in my intoxicated condition I should say, & it's making me crazy trying to recall.)

I like the Mysteryboy's tunes - very psyche just the way I like my music. I always had that penchant for this fuzzy feedback, Eastern melodic sound ever since I saw Bevis Frond in the 80's.

Happy to hear the Campout VI is on - but why only two days?
Hopefully I can make it this year, having so much time off with my problems I'm short of cash. I see what I can do. But if this doesn't turn out right there's always Campout VII.

I heard Quasi has a new album out, must investigate. Cheers.

I love that one too, but probably prefer the first album. The song "Cow" has some strange power over me -- I don't know why, but I've never heard that song without crying. I'm not even sure what it is that makes me cry, whether it's in the music or in the lyrics... The man created an abundance of very powerful music.

There's a brief snippet from an interview on the Sparklehorse "Distorted Ghost" ep, really just long enough for Linkous to mention his admiration for the late Vic Chesnutt...

Lance Mackey is a dog-sled racer here in Alaska, & has won the Iditarod race 3 times in recent years. He's also a cancer survivor & medical marijuana user (who recently had some trouble boarding a plane because his medical card had expired). For this year's race (which started today), a bunch of sore losers pushed through a rule requiring mushers to be tested for cannabis in their systems. Mr. Mackey apparently has cooperated with this new rule, giving up his medicine in order to participate in the race. I hope Mr. Mackey wins the race again... & then I hope he turns around & sues the race organizers for depriving him of his prescribed medications.

I read the guys were re-recording all of the tracks that were to appear on their forthcoming "Popular Songs" best of. I have their releases and had no interest in this one until I heard that. Now I have every intention of buying it. Message to other artists, this is a cool way to reinvigorate interest in your music.

I'm always open to new suggestions and think the series of interviews is a very good idea because they can be updated regularly. The problem with a book is that when it's published it doesn't progress beyond the publishing date - however, the idea of a book still is possible, see how it goes. My idea of getting the Crumbs involved, sounds plausible and getting the community together seems appealing.

Thanks for the link Morst - this band has a very complicated history. I think there's a good comprehensive history on Mungo's The Van site too.

No, seriously I always wanted a write a biography and was thinking of the Rileys. However, during the short spell the Rileys were an actual functioning band the book would be as thick as a weekly magazine.
At over 27 years, information/interviews from CVB and their fans/followers would fill a book of biblical proportions. Selling points:- #1 - a great read, #2 - great publicity, #3 - new readers to discover their music.
I'll be happy to fulfill a task - if we all club together, how about a collation of great memories and almost 3 decades of wonderful music.

I've been thinking on it all day, & I've decided the best thing would be a CVB Saturday morning cartoon show, similar to Scooby Doo but with filmed introductions & exits with the bandmembers, setting up the plotline at the start & then providing moral lessons at the end.

Second best would be a "rock-umentary" dvd providing historical framework with lots of filmed interviews with stoned people who may or may not have really known the band, & of course culminating with a rooftop concert that is shut down by police (on noise complaints, disturbing the peace) about halfway through the third song. Possible title: "Let It CV Be"...

What is really needed is an independently-wealthy totally-obsessed fan willing to spend a couple years researching & accumulating relevant documents & photographic &/or filmed evidence, & another year or two shopping it around.

Congratulations on being published, TDJHE, & I'm happy you survived. Of course dead authors generally sell better, but...

I've thought about having a go at it myself, but it would be impractical from my remote vantage point. There's a lot of information out there, but a big percentage of it is myth (much of which, of course, has been generated by the band). It would be a big project, to tell the story right as a book... Apparently it's much easier to make a thin "coffee table" book with oodles of photos of the band sweating under colored lights, press photos, & photos of various souvenirs, with almost no text information at all. Or at least that's what mostly seems to get published as rock "journalism"...

Hiya dirt! I've never heard of such a thing, but there are certainly a lot of interviews and articles online, as well as from print publications. Mungo's www.the-van.com is very useful as a reference database if there's specific info you are seeking about songs, lyrics or albums. archive.org/details/CamperVanBeethoven has a lot of live recordings. If you have questions, this is probably the best place to ask!!

Yes, that's all well & good, but what is surgical lint? How much glycerine? Left to dry, for how long? Less commonly used, but why? You leave us with more questions than answers.

My horrible neighbors perpetually assure me that the foul socialist medical practices of the UK medical establishment will simply decide it's cheaper to "euthanize" our favorite DJ, but I am convinced they are all idiots who should be fed to the dogs, & that everything is & will continue to be fine.

Boracic lint

Boracic lint was a type of medical dressing made from surgical lint that was soaked in a hot, saturated solution of boracic acid and glycerine and then left to dry.

It has been in use since at least the 19th century,[1] but is now less commonly used.

The term boracic lint, or often just "boracic", pronounced "brassic", is also used as Cockney rhyming slang for having no money. Boracic lint → skint.

I guess you all knew that though. Good luck with your procedures Ms. D

If the band is doing SXSW next year, my novel "Brothers" will be printed in Iowa and maybe in a position to help.
Meanwhile, listen to www.pipelineradio.net and my show should be up within the next few days. There are some good shows up at the moment, so give it a listen.

"Sponsor a CVB song at SXSW- Only $100!"
(Passing this on from Velena)

Why are we doing this? Well as you may know performers at SXSW are not really compensated sufficiently to cover travel and lodging costs. And for a band like CVB this didn't really matter in the days when there were actually record labels and/or our friends didn't mind us crashing on their couches (bad behaviour no record labels and no ) CVB doesn't even have a record label so we need to raise money to play at SXSW this year.

How it works. CVB will draw up two setlists. One for each show. Approximately 35 songs. The first 35 people to donate $100 dollars will get to choose a song. The first person gets the first choice from the setlist, the second person gets the second choice etc etc. Sorry but you will have to choose from the setlists that we create. We once tried a a fan generated setlist and it was really weird. Great for the hardcore fans but not so much for the civilians.

What you get. A Santa Cruz Roller Derby Girl will walk/skate across the stage carrying a placard announcing your sponsorship of the song. You can have up to 4 names or one business on each placard. We will contact you later for details how your sponsorship placard will read. We reserve the right to arbitrarily refuse sponsorship from anyone or any organization. For instance we will not be letting Mr. Hugh Jass and Ms. Ann Al-Aksam sponsor any songs.

Good news: The semi-literate racist who started the "tea party" movement publicly attacked Sarah P*lin a few days ago, calling her a wolf in sheep's clothing, further dividing the party on the right. I don't think that party will be able to unite behind one candidate in 2012, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see the tea-baggers form a new party (which they will call the Patriot party but will really be the Fascist party). The liberals are mad at the Ds for not being far enough left, the tea-baggers are mad at the Rs for not being enough to the right, & EVERYONE is mad about all the petty fighting & obstructionism. Yukon Cornelius you are right. Grace did write White Rabbit, but wrote it while in the Great Society who opened a few Airplane shows before the Airplane stole her. Both White Rabbit and Somebody To Love were staples of the Society's live sets. So in essence she took two GS songs and let the JA record them even though Somebody to Love was a song that Darby wrote, who I guess was her brother in law, not brother.

I should be more accountable for my statements on this here board.

I'm not sure about "Somebody To Love," but Grace did write "White Rabbit" -- she said it took her half an hour. The Airplane were to be on Ed Sullivan's show one Sunday evening (probably the last time they were ever invited), & apparently Grace spontaneously decided it would be good fun to wear black face makeup, like in an old minstrel show. As you can imagine, this was very upsetting to a lot of people at the time. & if that ain't rock & roll, I don't know what is.

My plumber is still at the top of his game, raeB, and does great work, so I'll keep him. The Dead peaked in 76. After that, Jerry was doing his best stuff with JGB. The Shakedown Street and Go To Heaven albums illustrate my point better than words can. Jumped the shark, they did.

In addition, fach Virgin records!

This may surprise you - the Dead had never been popular in the UK. I had only heard of them because I used to work with a hippy guy who attended concerts every year and had copied me some of the cassettes he brought back. I was always enchanted by Jerry's voice and the cacophony of instruments.
If there was any record company backup behind the Dead - would they have been more popular in the UK?

As for CVB and Cracker - bands promoted by Virgin nonetheless - I had to wait for 2006/7 before I heard one single note from them. And that was via the net.
Record co's are more of a hindrance than help. I think I'm one of a million people in the UK who had heard of NRT, the others being Ade, Mungo, Paul and Alick. 5 out of 60 million. And if it wasn't for the net these bands would still be in obscurity.

Mathematicians amongst you excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't that .20th of a population? or 0.002?

Interesting history of the Dead,'sgot me wondering how the music scene would differ today if not for the debt the record co. manufactured. Would we have such allegiance to our bands multiple live performances, the Dead having trained people to see them again and again? Archive.org? And of course what was missed by their not spending months stoned in the studio.
Anyway I'm surprised at how happy this music here still makes me after listening to it very often for the last 5 years and seeing them every chance and wondering when I'll get to see them again. I really didn't understand Deadheads before. Cheers

What I meant is that the Airplane had HIT SINGLES, they were wealthy rock stars. They owned a mansion, & other properties. The Dead didn't make any real money until they'd been at it 30 years.

Too much beer, what a silly idea. I've never heard such nonsense.

Yes, the Dead were around longer but should've hung it up about a decade before they did. At least, the Airplane knew when to stop and/or reinvent.

I remember back in the late 80s in Columbus, Ohio, my friends in the Royal Crescent Mob got signed to Sire records, very exciting time, who promptly took their incredible live sound and great songs then diluted and mushed up their sound and made them select their lamest (read accessible) tunes for singles and ridiculous remixes. The 'Spin The World' debut went nowhere. Hell, even I wanted to throw it away after listening to it. Then, the second album "Midnight Rose's", Sire gave them a little more control because they were already writing them off. But by this time, the momentum they had gained touring with Camper and so on had faded and this much-better album sank as well. Their third was self-produced and released and is their best, but the end, as they say, was nigh. Sucks.

Many people say that the internet and digital downloading have made it easier for people to record and release their own music. This is true, but it also keeps people from editing their own precious work. Because of digital, there is 100x more terrible music out there than there ever was when the labels ran the show.

I guess you take the good with the bad and vice versa and sideways...

I think "favourite" is cooler, & that spelling works quite well for a song that mentions "a place in the colonies"...

Yes, the Middle East recording is EXCELLENT.

Back to earlier, I can think of a handful of artists who had creative control while signed to a major label. I remember reading that RCA had many problems with Jefferson Airplane (especially regarding the line "up against the wall motherf___er"), but couldn't change anything except on "single" releases... The Dead didn't have the Airplane's level of success, but they had creative control at Warner Brothers. Sadly they did not have free studio time, ended up with a huge debt after 2 "psychedelic" albums that didn't sell. In their remaining time at Warner, they released a live album, 2 studio albums of country-ish music with no fancy effects, another live album, & another live album, & yet another live album, trying to keep recording costs down.

Enjoyed the article and photos Tim, many thanks.

I see your point Jef, record companies are strapped for cash and only invest in certain artists which most are ("cookie cutters") as you so rightly put it. I don't think they ever gave an artist control over their music, I may be mistaken, but signed artists always had to pander to company demands.
It seems to be a return to the 80's where independent bands and distribution companies overtook the establishment, which I say is a good thing. Now we have the net at hand to a band's advantage.

...& furthermore, I was thinking, we of the Geritol cocktails were lucky enough to be young at a time when the record companies were still completely confused by the jungle beats of rock music. For maybe the only time in history, artists were given lots of money & near-complete creative control. Before that time, the record companies held all the cards -- & now we're back to this cookie-cutter thing, manufactured bands being told exactly what to do & not making enough money to live on. The big record companies are dying, hooray, but there's still nothing to replace them with. Sure, tubebook & facespace & all that, but no real marketing & distribution, & no real money to provide the artists enough SLACK to be free of money hassles.

& I must say that I love how CBS is hyping the Super Bowl halftime appearance of The Who with footage from the mid-1970s, Daltrey swinging his mic & Pete sliding on his knees across the stage. Somehow, I reckon, The Who that plays the Super Bowl won't resemble that footage too much.

Jef - plenty of good music around, if you only know where to look. Why feel sorry for the younger generation they have Myspace, Facebook, Youtube and countless of other sites. They have more than I had as a youngster who only had Radio 1 and lost faith in music until I heard heavy metal.
Give Twenty Twenty a go, or The Rileys, The Boradcast - bands from London. And/or a million other bands. Some great rock out there. Muse and Them Crooked Vultures look back to the 60's and likewise Editors, Razorlight and White Lies take a nod to the 80's.
This is War by 30 Seconds to Mars is a masterpiece in the vein of Arcade Fire.
I blame commercial radio for keeping to the same r&b format that because they believe it's an audience for their ads. This halts people from discovering more music. Stop listening to radio....

White 928 guy in Toronto, sounds like a radio programmer and knows nothing better...

I feel so sorry for the youngsters of today, for perhaps thousands of reasons, not least among them being that the music scene has deteriorated so badly & continues to crumble. There's still good music being made (mostly by old folks), but it just doesn't have anywhere near the same importance or impact as it once did.

Everywhere I go I see kids wearing Bob Marley shirts, AC/DC shirts, Grateful Dead shirts, Nirvana shirts. Seems like many of today's kids already know their scene is pitiful compared to what came before.

(in an old man voice): Why, I tell you, I remember going to concerts where people actually shut the hell up & listened to the music, without everybody holding cel-phone cameras up blocking everyone's view of the stage!

Never knew there were age restrictions on good music. Me - I love anything from drum & bass to heavy metal, country to newternative sounds.
There shouldn't be an age for having a good time.
I'm really 21 but like my 42 year old friend Kev says - you know, long live CVB and the wonder of music. The Great "Master-Baiting" Bear will tell you.
And Morsty keep 'em coming - I appreciate everything you do here.

I brought an old friend to his first Cracker/CVB show in NYC.The sound was not too bad toward the back but it did have its moments.Kenny and Immy, too cool!
Anyways,my friend loved Cracker but said that CVB sounded like a cross between John Luc Ponty and the Charlie Daniels Band....alrighty then.Is that a bad thing? So I guess I gotta get to work on having him listen to more CVB.

You're right Prof. Sarno, great show and the sounds was worse on Greg's side. Low freq was horrible, much less distortion on Jonathan's side. Johnny mentioned the bad low freq in an interview. http://allknowingforce.com/wonderful/2010/01/13/johnny-hickman-cracker-interview/ Great sets from both bands. Good to see Immy.

The NYC set list was terrific, Abundance was a great opener and Turquoise Jewelry was a highlight for us, but I thought the sound was awful. I was near the front, sort of mid-left and at first I thought it was just me and my aging ears, but everyone around us could not get over how loud and distorted it sounded. Did anyone else have a similar experience? When David would sing or when the guitars got too hot, it got this sort of "flapping" distorted quality, like a blown speaker. I did find that with the proper application of earplugs plus fingers that I could hear through the noise and the playing and singing was fantastic! I'm not trying to be a downer here. I've seen CVB probably a dozen times and the sound is usually great. What gives?
