Any chance of the greatest hits coming out in a limited release heavy vinyl? Such a gorgeous cover deserves a 12x12 treatment. Maybe with a digital download included like I'm seeing on some of the records at the groovy comic/record shop across the street from my office.

Still no 25th tics yet, thanks to the person that posted about ducats mailing schedule, I thought maybe Jonathon was hand painting them.

Oh dear, I missed the deadline with my message. Never mind. I'll go for the second disc with demos when that's released. Must save my money for the big trip!!!!

Plus I need to get the following releases:-

1/2 - Victor's two recordings with and without Mrs Miller
3 - Jonathan Segel's Complete Harmonia works
4 - Greg Lisher's Tribute to Judas Priest (got to hear that riff for Living After Midnight - our Greg goes like a demon throughout that track)
5 - David Lowery's Chocolate and Tomato Ketchup (the much anticipated release from man who brought you Cigarettes and Carrot Juice and other vices)

And perhaps a Silver Jew CD thrown in for good measure.

You can see I'm not very good in saving money but as my old mum used to say: 'Money is Made For Spending'!

Mr zzzzzzzzzz - one day I may go to Edinburgh, heard so much about the place.

Hi Di, Embra's a blast - loads going on and good sunny weather makes it even better. Not so keen on the Silver Jews myself, saw them at Green Man and they were OK. A bit gutted that Life is Grand isn't re-recorded for the new redux album, but VERY happy that 7 Languages gets the nod. Everyone should hear that song.

I saw some pics of the band in the recording studio with Bruce Kaphan at Fantasy, I think they recorded it in mid-spring.

I'm assuming that the only re-recorded songs are the five songs listed, as Camper doesn't have the right to re-release the virgin era songs. I think Jonathan or somebody said that there is going to be a second disc of their earliest demos, however.

Thanks for the link, Mungo interesting cover.

Also thanks for the Silver Jews link, Alick - I quite like their sound. I think I'll investigate their new album when it comes out. How's Edinburgh?

This album release by CVB is it new remixes. I'd love to hear different takes and versions of the old favourites. I'm not really into 'gratest hits' compilations which I hope this isn't.
It would be great to hear a really heavy rock riff on Shut Us Down (hint hint) .
If this album hasn't been recorded yet - please coerce Victor to sing at least one song - thanks.

"I was reading a chick lit novel in the garden this afternoon when something in it reminded me of you! It was about a music teacher telling his class about a band who covered Status Quos "pictures of Matchstick men". he saiid it was a wonderfully named American indie band called Camper Van Beethoven & i immediately thought of you!"

What book?, I replied

"its called Pillow Talk by Freya North and the mention of said band is on page 203 of the paperback edition (how sad is that?!) for anyone who wants to know."

That campaign currently is at 60%, and discussions are going on on that site regarding day, time, format, etc. I too hope that these bands will get to play. So everyone else who is reading this, vote! And get your friends to vote! You do not have to be a musician planning to play the Campout to vote, just willing to support the cause!

GREAT FIND, ADE! It's like REDUX REDUX!!!!

“We endeavored to present an enticing set of popular songs from the much-acclaimed "secondary and tertiary recording periods" of the band, 1985-1990. We were, however, thwarted in this effort by a certain recording company which had released the later (tertiary) output of these original recordings. We made offers to buy back our own catalog, but they were rebuffed. Hence, still owning the publishing rights, we decided to re-record a few of these later songs. We have attempted to remake them to so closely resemble the original recordings as to be essentially exact forgeries, but keen ears may be able to sense an underlying maturity that the originals might have lacked. We apologize for that, but it couldn't be helped.”

That's an interesting point - dynamics has been lost in music since the invention of the CD and it's 16 bit format. I can't see the point of cranking up volumes to the point of distortion. There is one Foo Fighters CD (I can't remember its name but it was released around 2002) that falls into this category and although I love the Foo Fighters, I can't hardly listen to it before I get a headache. Same with Chilli Peppers Californication, but that isn't too bad.
It's producers like Rick Ruben and Timbaland who believe the teenage generation needs loud and loud is what they get.
I just been listening to My Chemical Romance and really can't tell the difference between the rhythm and lead guitars.

That's why I like VK's music - it has dynamics, all instruments can be heard, the skill and dexterity of musicians are noticed.

Thanks for the list for the confirmed bands. I don't see any Death of Me - are the Dangers going to play instead of them?
Also, is Labrador Dali and Daydrug playing too? I was under the impression that they are appearing.

VK - I don't know about the Bob Dylan track, or Robert Johnson for that matter - Fare Thee Well was brilliant. I just love anything with male and female voices combined.
The groove has that cool fifties vibe and perhaps I should look out for Dylan's Modern Times if the beat's similar. Thanks for posting; something to look forward to during the year.

Thanks Morst for the link to 4th Annual Campout and am glad to see Build For Spill playing there. Been playing 'You In Reverse' non stop since Saturday. I guess we're all studying BTS like its a degree.

Yo VK! Thanks for the sample! I like the duet part towards the end the best. Not quite Exene and John, but that's OK. I like the propulsive railroad train groove, it reminds me of Dylan's Someday Baby, off [[Modern Times]]. . . I'm sure he got that groove from someplace else, like Robert Johnson or something. Is that a shuffle beat?

Thanks Ike for these incredible stories. I enjoyed reading it. It looked as if Sky Saxon's brain had too much coke back in the 80's. I have a look at all these other bands - gives me some ground to go on.

Morst, I tried typing a few words and got spooked by the phantom of the page. Whilst reading, I was thinking what sort of crackers Sky threw to the audience - cheese crackers, or fire crackers. Note I'm typing the word CRACKERS here. Perhaps this page is CRACKERS.

I take it BTS is Build To Spill (crossing fingers here) and not Bullet to Shoot (or some unknown band with the initials BTS). If it is Built to Spill then I'll be a happy bunny. I have one of their records and it's brilliant.

I have to relate a couple of Seeds stories. Back in 1988 I went to go see Sky Sunlight Saxon with a band called SS-20 downtown LA at the Variety Arts Center. It was quite the mess. Sky seemed like he didn't have any idea what the words to his own songs were. It all seemed very much like an extended jam session. Mars Bonfire from Steppenwolf was the keyboard player and towards the end of the set they did Born to be Wild and Sky was just making up his own words. It was a train wreck but it was well worth the price of admission. After the show I managed to traverse my way to the backstage door and gave it a knock. I took my vynil copy of the Seeds Future to see if I could get him to sign it. So I knock on the door and Sky opens the door. He was kind of dirty with deep lines in his face and his beard was long and scruffy and had stuff in it. I asked him if I could get his autograph and he invited me backstage. He fired up a joint and I smoked out with Sky Saxon and then he said Future was his favorite Seeds album because he had done the painting that graces the front and back cover. He elaborately adorned the album cover with extra magic marker artwork and signed it "To my friend Ike, thanks Sky Sunlight Saxon 1988" I hung out for a few more minuntes but Sky disappeared, so I shuffled my way back out to the main room. I treasure that album cover.

Then in 1989 at the Universal Amphitheater they had a "Summer of Love reunion Show" that had the Strawberry Alarm Clock who had turned into a heavy metal band and played Incense and Peppermints and Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow as encores and were laughing the whole way through the songs like it was a big joke to them. Then Big Brother and the Holding Co. came out with a Mama Cass look-a-like filling the Janis Joplin role. They were eh....Then Sean Bonniwell and the Music Machine came out and tore the place to shreds. If you like that 60's punk garage stuff you have to check out the Music Machine. Then Arthur Lee and Love performed. Arthur was quite strange and animated that night and Love was great. Then the headliner was the complete original lineup of the Seeds. Sky came out all dressed in white and had cleaned up and shaved his beard off. I later heard that someone had told him he looked like Manson and he was horrified by that. I had a friend who worked at the LA Reader at the time and she scored pit tickets and we were in the front row and Sky came out throwing bunches of crackers s

You're right wha? the Seeds only did a few good tracks. I have a double CD (costing only £5) from Play.com bargain bin - but it's worth it for the history. Some of the keyboard work is quite good, especially in Pushing Too Hard.

There was a Santa Cruz band, The Batteries, that we used to try to convince to cover Pushing Too Hard, but they didn't get it and then they got attention and thought they were up and coming then they pussied out and added a keyboard player and put out an over produced record (clear vinyl(I still have it(it's cool for that(produced by Bill Spooner)))) and I never heard much of them again though Tony had a surprisingly nice house for a punkish singer.

love that song years ago we used to cover it..

The lights went out
in the abandoned house
Your house
After you left

Waved goodbye
Sat on a crate
Thought when I spoke
And thought when you're gone

It's just like every day, doo-doo-d'doo
It's just like every day, doo-doo-d'doodoo-doo
Just like every day, doo-doo-d'doo
It's just like every day

CHORUS:
Ice cream
I scream
Eye scream
Ice cream

Ride my bike
I turn the corner
And go home
Walk on the ground
Blink my eyes
Breath the air
And drink water
Just like every day

great song...

el turtle is correct about the photo. The confusing tattoo issue is cause by the fact that Jon's arm is crossed under victor's, so the tattoo appears to be on the arm connected to VHK's shoulder. Note that Victor is wearing a striped shirt, though, so the arm in the shirt actually belongs to him, not the one with the ink.

Mark- Camper has only played the Kinks tune live once that I know of - Pitown 2006. They have, however, recored songs called Ice Cream Every Day, and That's All For Everyone, on Vantiquities and Tusk, respectively.

front row L to R David I (counting crows, cvb part time, monks of doom,Glider, was grammy nominated when he played with John Hiatt)David Lowery, dont know who the black haired guy is unless its Jonathan and it has to be(cvb and at least a half a dozen side projects as well as solo albums)and Victor (cvb , cracker bassist for a couple or 3 three years, many solo albums)
Now I ask a question do Jonathan and Victor have the same tatoo of a lizard on opposite arms and what does it mean? I hope these are right The only ones i am not positive on are Jonathan and Victor that tatoo is throwing me off

Caught kgnu.com at the wrong time - they were playing dance and hip-hop. Most Friday afternoons I'm working and won't be able to hear the below mentioned Alternative show.
Thanks for the link.

This may be a dumb question to all of you, but when you open this site there's this photo of seven people in a graffiti filled cubical. Is the bald guy on the extreme left Michael Stipe of REM? He looks so much like him. In fact the only one I do recognise is David Immergluck of the Counting Crows.
Cheers for any info.

For probably more than a decade, I've arranged my life so that I'll always be able to listen to the Friday Afternoon Sound Alternative on <KGNU> out of Boulder, Colorado. 3 hours of strange music from all sorts of genres & subgenres, most of which I've never heard before; freeform radio at its finest. If curious, you can stream through their website, & you can even listen to past programs... Over the years I've heard a lot of CVB & related stuff on there; it comes to mind that I heard plenty of Electric Chairmen on KGNU long before I learned that JES, Victor, & Greg played on the album... For whatever reason, they hadn't played any CVB for a long long time, but in the past few weeks I've heard "Hippy Chix" & "Life Is Grand" on the program. I don't know, I seem to get really excited when I hear CVB on the radio...

Incidentally, the Dead donated their paperwork (contracts & fan mail & all that sort of thing) to UC Santa Cruz, not the tapes/music. Rhino still has rights to the music, for at least a few more years...

Just got the news that the Grateful Dead's archives will permanently become part of the "Special Collections" at UC Santa Cruz's McHenry Library!

"It seemed to all of us that the stuff really belongs to the community that supported us for all those years," [guitarist Bob] Weir told The New York Times on Wednesday. "And Santa Cruz seemed the coziest possible home for it."

I wonder if some other California bands might follow suit and give their archives a permanent home at the City On A Hill?! ;-)

I have read that the Abbey Pub shows in 2003 was when the members of CVB knew that they were "back" - that CVB was a vital entity, and not just a rehash or a nostalgia gig. I was at the [[show in Madison]] the following night, and according to the voices coming from the Powerbooks on stage, "The Abbey Pub is trying to kill us!" I think I remember some comment about them playing from atop the pool tables?!!

that 18th jan 2003... man, that was a good show. that set you are referring to is the second show of the night. CVB scheduled TWO shows- the first was at something like 7:30 pm and the second was something like 10 pm. the first set was incredible, but maybe only 90 minutes long (ONLY...) a bunch of us had tickets for both sets, and we had to sit around the bar for an hour before the later set, and i remember us all talking about how, after the first set we would not be surprised if they came back and were a little tired or what not... we really werent expecting all that much from the 2nd set. but then they came out and just started playing and playing, it was immediatedly apparent that that first set only warmed them up. one of the best shows ive seen (i think that was their first jaunt to chicago post-reunion), especially when they came out with Surprise Truck... wow! good memories!

Thanks so much for victor miller. Victor's an underused vocalist in CVB. Sounds like something that could easily fit into a future solo Victor release though.

Yeah, I didn't put Jonathan down as an artist on Closing Theme since it came out on the Pictures of Matchstick Men 3" CD Single UK release (wow, I've had that a long time now!). Think I'll go add now...

It's also on CVB Is Dead, Long Live CVB - guess it was sneaked on there since it was a Virgin Records release - I thought they still had the rights to that period...? There's a bit of "crowd noise" dubbed onto it on that version.

"small hole in time" came from a bootleg CVB OBRS album demos CD that got out somehow ( http://www.the-van.com/discog/result.php?detail=tracks&id=11&discog_type=bootleg ).

there was also a third album demos CD ( http://www.the-van.com/discog/result.php?detail=tracks&id=7&discog_type=bootleg )

[[Mungo's site]] has the following info for closing theme, but doesn't mention señor jes on it. . .

Format: Split-release Single
First released: 1990 (USA)
Media: 7in. vinyl
Label(s): Evatone
Performing artists: David Lowery, Victor Krummenacher, Greg Lisher, Chris Pedersen

Notes:
free flexi-disk from The Bob Magazine #57

1. Camper Van Beethoven: Guitar Hero [a.k.a. Closing Theme]
2. Barbara Manning: [Someone Wants You Dead]
3. Russ Tolman: [See No Evil (Russ Tolman)]

So Victor Miller is very cool! Seems to have some odd high-frequency swishing pitch things- I assume they are intentional?! By the way, any relation to McCabe and Mrs. Miller? (the track does sound like it has a couple small skips in it . . . see 0:12 1:16, and 1:45. . .)

i *think* that small hole in time was something we were working on for a magazine flexi release or something that was supposed to be a multi-part song that was called "Guitar Hero" that later became the "Closing Theme". i have it on a 3" cd single of matchstick men (with jack ruby and humid press of days.)

Craig Breedloe was on TV not long ago talking about his career and there was footage of him in the desert. I'm surprised to see Steve Fosset has died in a plane crash in 2007. I remember him going across the Atlantic in a hot air balloon with Virgin Records Richard Branson. Thanks for the interesting link about Breedlove, Jes.

As for Small Hole In Time I wished they had finished it. It sounds slightly like the Dutch band Supersister who had hits in the 70's and their music was very much in that style of rapid speech and grand choruses about drug taking and hallucination.
I'll try and find some Supersister links and post them to this page if they are available.

I can't seem to get the link to Untitled, Unfinished Demo, Mungo. Hopefully you can try and link it again.

ok here's a little clarification. Craig Breedlove (see link) was once the fastest man on earth. the song called craig breedlove was recorded at sound of music in pre-production for NRT, along with a few others like "Victor Miller" (i have that somewhere...) and "Here Come the Warm Milk" obviously 'warm milk' was finished quickly and ended up on Edgy Not Antsy, but the others never got anywhere. During the NRT sessions proper, we redid Craig into something that David had going on called "rhythm in my head" which was going to also be the cover of "Come Out" (the Steve Reich tape loop phase piece) but david never did the "come out to show dem" vocal loop for it. nonetheless, it now has the "rhythm in the head" choruses and a further Steve Reich reference (bridge has "it's gonna rain!!") but somehow never made it to the album sequence. It is now called "It's Gonna Rain" i think. or rhythm in my head.
i don't know "Small Hole in Time" though i like the title...

craig breeds love became something else didnt it? i want to say it was an instrumental version of 'ballad of chas m' or something like that- or maybe disco cvb before it was called disco cvb... something like that...

I think a speech engine is not a singer. It does not require a vocal microphone any more than a sampler does, so I'll call SotM an instrumental. Uh, Sisters Of The Moon, not Stander On The Mountain (Bruce Hornsby) or Standing On The Moon (Grateful Dead).

Apr 15 at 10:28 am

OK, so 073003000 isn't quite an instrumental. David's quietly singing or humming something unintelligible towards the end.

So, Sisters of the Moon has lyrics but not really a singer - it's a Mac speech engine... so is that an instrumental? :)

ooh, i've never heard an instrumental version of Col Enrique - only the "sung" version off TTSB 12" and the euro "II & III & Plus" CD. None of the obscure songs I mentioned were this (although 073003000 isn't on my ipod so I can't remember it (it's at home). It was a rough compressed WAV file sneaked into a folder on the gwbinp website back in the days of evidence...)

morst, you're right, I was being over-picky with Processional :)

I wouldn't call Border Ska the instrumental version of Heart, despite it's similarities for the first 2 bars. They differ somewhat after that (not just the lyrics but the chords). If you listened to late-60s Fleetwood Mac blues you'd think half their songs were the same instrumental, different lyrics :-)

Looking on my ipod, Craig Breed Love is indeed an instrumental. So is Silent Monster, which I completely forgot about. It kind of sounds like a 80s TV theme, but I don't think it's SWAT :) You could also add Hava Nagila, which has appeared in many an SP37957 medley.

I am reasonably certain that the so-called "vocals" on Processional are not sung live, but rather generated by the Mac Powerbook in the current incarnation of CVB. Take a listen to the [[Pitown soundcheck version]] for details. "Could you play that 'Processional thing' again for me?"

So if we can count Los Tigres Traficantes, then we can include Processional as well.

I note that Mungo, the World's Foremost Compleatist, has checked in. I saw Camper dozens of times in the 80's, and I have a question.

Has anyone yet mentioned the instrumental version of "Colonel Enrique Adolfo Bermudas"? Perhaps one of the obscure songs that Mungo mentions is the instrumental version, which probably has a different title? I saw Camper play this many times in the 80's, never once with lyrics. In fact, I did not know that the song also had a version with lyrics, until I heard a twenty year old recording a few years ago.

Also, perhaps I was always clueless about tv, but I never saw Camper play theme from swat. Cannot even think how that goes.

The instrumentals, to me, are very special and they are what truly set Camper apart. Just like a video kind of intrudes on the way you think about a song, so do lyrics. An instrumental allows you to feel however you want about a song, without getting an unnecessary picture from the lyrics. I cannot ever listen to the instrumental version of "Heart" (Vantiquities) (the instrumental appears on their first album, Telephone Free Landslide Victory) again without hearing those lyrics, and it kind of bugs me. "Heart" kinda ruined the instrumental version for me. Anyone care to come up with the title of the instrumental, on the Telephone record? Is it Border Ska?

OK, strike these:
Tina (no English lyrics!?) - it's still singing!
Processional - it goes "ah ah ah ah ah ah" so not strictly instrumental. Though it is strictly awesome!
Porpoise Mouth - not at all instrumental!
Circles (backwards lyrics only) - still counts! they even sing it live!
Opi Rides Again - strictly only 1/2 a song!
Small Hole In Time (no singing!) - where did you get that title from? I know the (incomplete) song you mean, it has Victor singing on it I think. But I never found a title!
I Hate This Part Of Texas - the album version has lyrics

And here's some more:
073003000 (obscure enough for ya!?)
Craig Breed Love (I can't remember if it has lyrics or not!)
Pope Festival (ditto re: lyrics)
Deux Foises
Los Tigres (if recorded voices don't count)
Interlude
Staying At Home With The Girls In The Morning (Vienna Club Mix)
The Poppies Of Balmorhea
Wade In The Water
Interstellar Overdrive (and all it's medleys)

Haven't heard any more about a songbook sampler. I think Chris LeRoy is concentrating on getting The Dangers done at the moment!
I know I'm missing some too!

Since I am on call at the hospital until midnight with the very likelihood of nothing to do, I made sure to transfer several live CVB shows on to my MP3 player. It also got me thinking about the top CVB performances I have seen. Number one would have to be in Atlanta shortly after they reformed. Two full sets and very cohesive playing. The second is actually the '07 Campout. Due to communion with Father Dan I was in bad shape but the set was incredible. I also loved the Gothic (Denver) double CVB/Cracker performance of a couple of years ago. Victor was great in both sets. My 2 cents.

What language is the Shiner Bock song in? Sounds like a hybrid of Polish, Spanish and Loweryism.

I thought Disco CVB was done by computers.

What are the exact lyrics to Jonathan's song "Scars" from the Honey album? This has become my favorite song as of late, but a few of the words are getting lost on me, no matter how closely I listen.

Indeed Porpoise Mouth was by Country Joe and The Fish. I've heard of their version and the one by CVB.

Morst, what an impressive list of instrumentals. I never knew they did that many.
One tune was forgotten - the Theme from S.W.A.T. which was featured in the 1986 shows recently put up on this board.

dont mean to be the nit-picker to your otherwise impressive list, but porpoise mouth has words: "i hunger for your porpoise mouth" i seem to recall it being a cover song (country joe and the fish?) and believe the allusion was similar to what today would be referred to as camel toe.
there is also opening and closing themes and inderlude from key lime pie

Welcome to the world's most forgotten site on the net. Abandoned, left out in the cold, and in need of a message or two.

Now with most of the contributors dealing with Mad Russians, or running off to Italy for a few weeks, it looks as if I'm the only one left to write, to keep this site's memory alive.
The net can be a lonely place, sad as it is, and someone has set up this site for the onslaught of millions of messages - but as you all know, no one writes anymore.
Someone, please write - please spend your time by making the modorator of this site happy by writing in and saying Hi...
Many thanks for your support.

i remember that old town school of folk music camper show very well, it was the first time i saw camper 'outside' which can be very different from seeing them in a cramped smoky bar...

the jayhawks were quite remarkable for a while until mark olson left to persue solo interests, after that imho the output of the band was syrupy pop pandering. check out 'tomorrow the green grass' for the band at its height.

there is some rumor that olson and louris are writing together again so there may be some sort of reunion- i think the two of them together do something magical which is more than the sum of their parts.

and just in case anyone might care, labrador dali is now on the [[archive]]

I liked the Jayhawks when I saw them but never could get into their records. Strange that he goes on last...I don't think I'd want to follow the Mekons.

I don't think I've ever missed an X show in Houston! We get the Detroit Cobras as openers who were a bit of a disappointment when I saw them at SXSW last year (the singer was beyond drunk) but I like what I've heard on various samplers so I'll give them another chance.

Weird cosmic connection ;^) to all of this: on my 40th birthday almost five years ago I went to Chicago to see the Mekons do an early show at Martyr's, X play the House of Blues, and the next day Camper at the Old Town School's folk and roots festival (where all the Mekons and John Doe were in the audience.) Best birthday ever!

Never heard the mekons but have heard good things about them. The [[Barrymore]] is a short walk from my place, but the show is at 8pm and I don't get off work until about 9, so I probably won't try to go. Opening act is Gary Louis from the Jayhawks. Tomaas tried to turn me on to them, but I have not really given 'em a listen at all. I will mention that X is tearing up the country on their 31st anniversary tour! They'll be going west, then back east in May. Check 'em if you can!

Morst-I was just noticing that the Mekons are coming through Madison this week--Thursday at the Barrymore Theatre. Have you ever seen them? Highly recommended for a fun evening. I'm not sure what format they'll be using, acoustic or electric, but either way you can't go wrong. The Mekons are pretty much the only band I've done extensive traveling to see outside of Camper/Cracker shows (and R.E.M. in the distant past) and would have loved to see this tour if I could afford it. But Pioneertown airfare looms....

As far as Italy goes, I have an expat friend who lives in Rome and would probably go if she could get to it but job demands and lack of a vehicle are a problem for out of town shows. I may send her the VK/GL/JES sched though in case she has friends that might be interested.

Yep, would love to see Carla B play at PTown, haven't seen her or the Fibbers live but Evangelista is one of the best things out in years. As is [shameless plug] the new one by Fach Buttons - a mix of Residents and cLOUDDEADy sort of techno. I'd love to see them live - there's arguments on blogs about whether they are really trying to scare the audience away or not.
